The name “Shah” refers to
an Iranian king or monarch whose lineage conquered the
Indian subcontinent in the 16th century. In this Mughal
Era the Maharajas became famous connoisseurs of jewelry
and gems.
Shah Jewelry is a subsidiary of Shaw Jewelry
of Northeast Harbor, Maine. Shah Jewelry was born of
the love of Maharaja jewelry and the jewelry arts of
India. Shaw Jewelry, established in 1982, is a retail
store that has been located in Northeast Harbor for
more than 25 years. Owner Sam Shaw has been making jewelry
since childhood. His interest in Mughal jewelry began
in college when, while on a three-month trip to India,
he studied jewelry making in New Delhi under the guidance
of Vivian Tellis-Nayak. Sam also studied under a master
goldsmith in the shop of Messrs Kandahar in 1975. Despite
lack of a shared language, the experience was meaningful
and instructive, and it provided a detailed glimpse
into the workings of an Indian goldsmith and the techniques
employed.
Sam later went on to earn a masters
degree in jewelry making from the renowned Rhode Island
School of Design. He has been producing his own designs
for three decades. You can find out more about Sam and
his jewelry at www.shawjewelry.com.
